The United States has notified India that 487 presumed Indian nationals are currently facing final removal orders, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri revealed on Friday. Addressing a press briefing, he assured that the Indian government is actively engaging with US authorities to resolve the issue and ensure the safe return of those affected.
Misri stated that the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) is closely monitoring the situation and is in regular communication with the Trump administration. The issue of deportation has gained significant attention, especially amid concerns about the treatment of detained immigrants. Misri acknowledged these concerns, calling them “valid” and affirmed that India would raise the matter with US officials.
“The government remains committed to safeguarding the rights and dignity of Indian nationals abroad. We will take up any instances of mistreatment and work towards a fair resolution,” Misri said.
Reports indicate that a substantial number of deportees are from Gujarat, with some Indian immigrants having already been sent back in government-arranged transport. This development highlights broader challenges related to illegal immigration and border enforcement policies in the US.
Misri also referenced the standard operating procedures of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), which include the use of restraints during deportation. He noted that such measures had been in practice for years and that India would continue to address concerns regarding their implementation.
