Indian Billionaire’s ‘Work 24/7’ Remark Fuels Backlash Over Hustle Culture

Billionaire Sunny Varkey’s claim that success requires working “24/7” has triggered intense backlash online. While some admire his dedication, others argue his views promote unhealthy hustle culture and ignore privilege. Critics stress the need for work-life balance and question the wisdom of glorifying relentless work as a universal path to success.

Sunny Varkey, the Indian-born billionaire and chairman of Dubai-based GEMS Education, has stirred widespread debate after stating that true success requires the ability to "literally work 24/7." His remarks came during an interview with Emirati podcaster Anas Bukhash, where he shared insights into his journey from modest roots to building one of the world’s largest private education groups.

Varkey emphasized that his success was not a matter of luck but the outcome of relentless dedication, discipline, and hard work. “If I work eight hours like everybody else, I won’t be successful,” he said, asserting that passion must be matched with extreme commitment. He acknowledged the importance of work-life balance but called it “difficult” and “not very easy” for anyone aiming to build something substantial.

The statement has since gone viral, sparking strong reactions on social media. While some applauded Varkey’s transparency about the sacrifices behind his empire, many criticized the glorification of non-stop work. Detractors argued that promoting a 24/7 work ethic is harmful, unrealistic, and dismissive of mental health concerns.

Several users also challenged the billionaire’s portrayal of his background. Critics pointed out that Varkey benefited from a privileged foundation — his parents founded a respected school in the UAE and had ties with local elites, providing him early exposure and opportunity. Many noted that millions work tirelessly without similar advantages and that romanticizing nonstop hustle overlooks structural inequalities.
