In a recent development, the Indian High Commissioner, Vikram Doraiswami, encountered a disruptive incident instigated by radical Sikh activists, preventing his entry into a gurdwara in Glasgow, Scotland.
The High Commission of India promptly decried this event, branding it as 'shameful'.
On September 29, 2023, three individuals, none of whom were native to Scotland, intentionally disrupted a planned gathering arranged by the Gurudwara Committee, aimed at discussing community and consular issues. Among the attendees were distinguished community leaders, committee members, and even a Scottish parliament member. Unfortunately, they were subjected to threats and verbal abuse from these individuals.
To prevent potential escalation, both the High Commissioner and the Consul General of India made the decision to depart the premises shortly after their arrival.
The situation took a dangerous turn when one of the non-local extremists made an attempt to forcibly open the door of the High Commissioner's vehicle. Thanks to the timely intervention of one of the organizers, a more serious incident was narrowly avoided.
The High Commission of India expeditiously reported this regrettable incident to the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) and the Metropolitan Police.
Several community organizations, including the event planners, have formally expressed remorse over the incident and have urged authorities to take appropriate measures against the wrongdoers.
This unfortunate episode underscores the necessity for heightened security measures and constructive dialogue to foster better understanding and unity within the community.
