Indira
Gandhi, born on November 19, 1917, left an indelible imprint on Indian
politics. Serving as Prime Minister from 1966 to 1977 and then again from 1980
until her tragic assassination in 1984, she emerged as the country's first and,
to date, only female Prime Minister. Her significant influence on the political
landscape persisted even after her tenure, marking her as a central figure
within the Congress party.
The
daughter of Jawaharlal Nehru, India's inaugural Prime Minister after
independence, Indira Gandhi's leadership was succeeded by her son, Rajiv Gandhi.
Her tenure of 15 years and 350 days in office solidified her position as the
second-longest-serving Prime Minister in Indian history, second only to her
father, Jawaharlal Nehru.
The
commemoration of Indira Gandhi's birth anniversary brought together leaders
from disparate political ideologies, unifying them in acknowledgment of her
lasting impact on the nation's political landscape.
