NEW DELHI, APRIL 15: In a significant development, Iran has agreed to allow Indian government officials to meet with 17 Indian crew members of the cargo ship MSC Aries, which was seized by the Iranian military near the Strait of Hormuz.
This assurance was provided by Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian during a phone conversation with India's External Affairs Minister, S Jaishankar.
The diplomatic interaction comes amid escalating tensions in the Middle East, following a series of hostile engagements between Iran and Israel. The MSC Aries, linked to Israel, was captured by Iranian commandos in a dramatic raid, footage of which was broadcasted internationally, heightening the geopolitical stakes in the region.
During their conversation, Jaishankar expressed India's concerns regarding the safety and well-being of the Indian nationals aboard the seized vessel and sought Tehran's assistance in securing their wellbeing. In response, Amirabdollahian informed that the necessary arrangements for a meeting between Indian representatives and the crew members would be facilitated soon.
The seizure of the MSC Aries occurred shortly after Iran launched a retaliatory attack against Israel, firing approximately 300 drones and missiles. This was in response to an earlier Israeli strike on an Iranian embassy in Damascus, which had significantly ratcheted up tensions between the two nations.
In the diplomatic talks, Amirabdollahian highlighted Iran's stance on what it perceives as "legitimate defense" actions and discussed the broader context of the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
He advocated for India’s active engagement through international platforms such as the UN Security Council to help mediate and resolve the conflicts in the region, emphasizing the need for a sustainable ceasefire and the establishment of long-term peace and security.
From India's perspective, Jaishankar reiterated the critical need to de-escalate tensions and called for restraint from all involved parties. He emphasized the importance of returning to diplomatic negotiations to ensure a resolution that would prevent further escalation.
Jaishankar also communicated with Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz, discussing the volatile regional situation and the importance of ongoing dialogue to address the unfolding crisis.
This diplomatic outreach by India underscores its complex role in the region, balancing relations with both Iran and Israel amidst their intense conflict. The situation remains fluid, with international efforts continuing to navigate a peaceful resolution amidst the ongoing strife that has gripped the Middle East.
