Iran has granted early release to Austrian citizen Christian Weber, who was convicted of spying among other offenses. Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer praised the efforts to secure Weber’s release and expedite his return to Austria. The case, disclosed in late 2022, saw limited public details amid Iranian unrest.
Iran has granted early release to Austrian citizen Christian Weber, who was previously convicted of crimes including spying, Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer announced on Tuesday. The early release comes ahead of the completion of Weber's sentence.
Chancellor Nehammer expressed satisfaction over the Foreign Ministry and the embassy's efforts in securing Weber's release. “I am very pleased that the Austrian Foreign Ministry and the embassy in Tehran have succeeded in securing the early release of Christian Weber from Iranian custody,” Nehammer stated on social media platform X.
The Austrian embassy in Tehran is now focused on facilitating Weber's swift departure from Iran so he can reunite with his family in Austria. The case, which Austria disclosed in late 2022, has seen limited public discussion from both Vienna and Tehran. At the time, Iran was experiencing significant unrest following the death of Mahsa Amini, though Austria clarified that Weber's charges were unrelated to the Amini case.
In February, Austria’s foreign minister revealed that Weber’s original conviction for spying had been overturned on appeal, and his sentence was reduced. However, specific details about the other crimes Weber was convicted of remain unclear.

According to Iran's Mizan news agency, Weber's release was granted in the spirit of Islamic mercy. Weber, who was detained for crimes committed in Iran's West Azerbaijan Province, was handed over to Austria’s ambassador to arrange his exit. Calls to both the Austrian embassy and Iran's judiciary for further comment were unanswered.
