The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has formally charged Maharashtra IPS officer Bhagyashree Navtake with forgery and criminal conspiracy, as announced on October 17, 2024. The allegations are tied to her role as the head of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) during an inquiry into a ₹1,200 crore scam involving the Jalgaon-based Bhaichand Hirachand Raisoni Credit Society.

Navtake, who served as the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) for the Economic Offenses Wing from 2020 to 2021, faces serious charges under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code, including 120-B, 466, 474, and 201. The charges stem from findings in a report by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), which highlighted significant procedural lapses and instances of forgery during the investigation.

The CID report revealed troubling practices by Navtake, including the registration of three cases under a single crime on the same day and securing signatures from complainants without their physical presence. This raised red flags that prompted the Maharashtra Home Department to direct the Pune Police to take action against her.

The alleged scam, originating in 2015, involves claims of deceitful practices promising high interest rates on fixed deposits to a multitude of individuals. The case has been under investigation since it was transferred to the CBI in 2020, with ongoing probes into the directors of a Delhi-based company implicated in defrauding multiple banks. The situation continues to evolve as the CBI investigates the broader implications of this high-profile case.
