The escalating water level of the Ganga River in Kanpur has heightened the risk of waterlogging in low-lying regions and villages such as Chainpurwa, Gopalpurwa, and Baniyapurwa.
At present, the measurements indicate that the Ganges River is flowing at 114.750 meters upstream of the Ganga Barrage. It stands at 114.55 meters downstream in Kanpur. The water level of the Ganga in Shuklaganj is currently recorded at 113.160 meters.
According to an official from the irrigation department, these water levels are predicted to increase further due to the discharge of 1,26,978 cusecs of water from the Narora Dam. This situation has been raising concerns about the potential flooding and water-related issues in the region.
Visakh Iyer, the District Magistrate of Kanpur, conducted an on-site inspection of the affected village to assess the situation. During his visit, he interacted with the local residents and issued instructions to the Tehsildar to ensure their safe relocation to more secure locations.
In response to the rising water levels, all flood outposts have been put on high alert, and additional flood posts have been activated to respond effectively to the situation.
The DM revealed, “Food items, medicines, drinking water, lights and other necessary items are being made available in the villages where the approach road has washed away or got waterlogged.” He further added, “Officials are also being deployed and asked to take necessary actions.”
Reacting to the situation, the Chief Minister has already issued orders for the deployment of a team of Tehsil personnel to oversee and assess the conditions in the areas most severely impacted.
