The Kerala Cabinet has approved a new spirits strategy for the years 2023 and 2024, with an emphasis on increasing the state's ability to export alcoholic beverages produced in other countries. Under this strategy, the government will adjust the current export fees in an effort to promote and facilitate booze exports.
The new policy also recommends allowing the sale of foreign liquor in IT parks and industrial parks across the state, although the specifics will be worked out later in conjunction with the appropriate agencies.
Beer and spirits will be served in tourist zones and restaurants throughout the tourist season to attract both domestic and international visitors. This move was made to improve the vacation experience for visitors and bring in more money for the state.
The government of Kerala has also decided to raise the price of a bar licence from Rs 30-35 lakh. This change will hopefully lead to more effective oversight and administration of bars throughout the state.
MB Rajesh, the state's excise minister, has announced that they plan to rename toddy "Kerala toddy" and advertise it as Kerala's native alcoholic drink. The goal of this programme is to allow high-end lodgings in tourist areas to legally harvest toddy from palm palms on their property. The hope is that by taking this action, Kerala's rich cultural history will be more known and appreciated by tourists, resulting in increased revenue for the state.
The state administration of Kerala hopes that these new regulations will help boost the state's burgeoning alcohol business while also attracting more tourists and protecting the region's unique cultural identity. The government's forward-thinking attitude towards income creation and sustained economic growth is reflected in the following year's authorised spirits policy.
