Kullu police conducted a successful rescue operation, transporting tourists to safer areas. IMD has issued cold wave alerts, warning of further snowfall and travel disruptions in the region.
Himachal Pradesh faced one of its largest traffic jams in recent history as heavy snowfall and holiday tourists converged near Solang Nala in Kullu district. Over 1,000 vehicles, carrying approximately 5,000 tourists, were trapped in snow-covered roads as visitors flocked to Manali and Shimla for Christmas and New Year celebrations.
The massive jam, which began on Friday after fresh snowfall, prompted an immediate response from Kullu police. In a round-the-clock operation, local authorities and police personnel worked tirelessly to clear the congestion and escort stranded travelers to safer locations. Videos circulating on social media showed officers navigating knee-deep snow, spreading sand to prevent skidding, and directing vehicles to alleviate the backlog.
Kullu Police confirmed the rescue effort through a statement on social media platform X, assuring the public that tourists were transported safely and operations were ongoing to clear the remaining blockages.
The incident coincided with an orange alert issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), warning of intense snowfall and cold waves across six districts, including Kullu, Shimla, and Lahaul-Spiti. The advisory highlighted the risk of road blockages and potential delays in the region.
