Several months after the start of the
ongoing Mahsa Amini anti-Hijab protests in Israel, the government has begun
demonstrating sheer abuse of power to bring in institutional changes in Israel
and suppress the protests.
Judicial
Reforms Proposed by The Israel Government
The Israeli government led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has sought to introduce judicial reforms which will loosen the control of the judiciary over legislative and administrative actions of the ruling government.
The judicial reforms include the Israeli
government’s say in deciding the judges of the Supreme Court of Israel and the
power of legislative review. The power of legislative review is converse to the
power of judicial review.
Generally, the legal systems of all
civilized nations follow judicial review, which means that the highest court of
a country holds the power to review legislative actions such as bills, acts,
ordinances, and administrative orders.
However, the judicial reforms proposed by the Israeli government essentially suggest a legislative review, which means that the Parliament will be in a position to review judgments pronounced by the Supreme Court. It will be an inherently wrong step to adopt since decisions taken by the Parliament are influenced by political agenda and favoritism rather than rational thoughts and logic of the judiciary.
Lakhs
Join in Protest
Israeli people have vehemently come out
against the actions of the government. 110,000 people were reported to protest
in Tel Aviv alone. A poll released by the Israeli public broadcaster reported
that 74% of the Israeli population was dissatisfied with the government.
