In response to the murder of a 53-year-old lawyer who was fatally shot in southwest Delhi's Dwarka on Saturday evening, the legal community in Delhi has decided to stage a protest by completely ceasing work in all district courts on the following day. The New Delhi Bar Association (NDBA) has informed its members through a letter that the coordination committee of all district bar associations in the capital has agreed to abstain from all types of work, including bail and stay hearings. Additionally, photocopy machines in the courts will be closed as well.

According to the police, Virender Kumar Narwal, a 53-year-old lawyer, was killed in an attack in Dwarka, southwest Delhi on Saturday evening. Two individuals riding a motorcycle opened fire on Narwal while he was inside his car, as reported by M Harsh Vardhan, the Deputy Commissioner of Police in Dwarka. Narwal resided in Dwarka Sector-12 and worked as an advocate.

On Saturday at 4:20 p.m., the police received a report about a murder incident near Sector-1 in Dwarka. In response, a police team quickly went to the location. Kumar was discovered in an unresponsive state while occupying the driver's seat. He was subsequently transported to a medical facility, where medical professionals pronounced him deceased. Law enforcement officials indicated that he had sustained numerous gunshot wounds to his chest, hands, and shoulders.

As per a report citing police sources, Kumar's murder was a result of a long-standing feud with Pradeep that began 36 years ago when Kumar's grandfather allegedly killed Pradeep's uncle in 1987. Additionally, Kumar had reportedly obstructed Pradeep's land compensation process, leading to his financial troubles. In 2017, Pradeep had also attempted to kill Narwal, but the lawyer managed to escape unharmed while his driver sustained injuries.

The murder has been denounced by lawyers who have called it an assault on the entire legal community in Delhi. In recent years, there has been a significant increase in the number of attacks on lawyers. The North Delhi Lawyers Association (NDLA) has reported a surge in incidents of advocates being threatened and subjected to violent acts. They have also expressed concern that the authorities are not taking steps to protect them, even when their families are in a vulnerable position.

In a statement, the North Delhi Lawyers Association (NDLA) has emphasized the urgent need for the implementation of the Advocate Protection Act in Delhi, a demand they have been making for quite some time now. They have also called upon the Commissioner of Police in Delhi to prioritize matters related to the safety and security of advocates.
