The Madras High Court has ordered a CBI investigation into the Kallakurichi hooch tragedy that killed 68 people, following opposition allegations of governmental corruption. CM Stalin announced compensation and support for affected families, while the case highlights the need for an impartial probe into the production of spurious liquor.
The Madras High Court has directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to take over the probe into the Kallakurichi hooch tragedy, one of Tamil Nadu's worst such incidents, which claimed 68 lives on June 19, 2024. The ruling was made by a bench comprising Justices D. Krishnakumar and P.B. Balaji in response to pleas from opposition parties, including the AIADMK, BJP, and PMK.
The Tamil Nadu Police had been investigating the case and had arrested more than a dozen suspects. However, opposition parties alleged corruption within the DMK-led state government, blaming it for enabling the production and distribution of the spurious liquor responsible for the tragedy.
In the aftermath of the incident, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin announced a compensation package of ₹10 lakh for each victim’s family. Additionally, the state committed to funding the education and hostel expenses of children who lost parents in the tragedy, along with depositing ₹5 lakh in the accounts of children orphaned by the incident.
