In the case of 4th May, 2023, six accused have been arrested so far. On Saturday, 22nd July, 2023, another accused was arrested in case of Viral Video by Manipur Police.
A video which showed two women being paraded naked and sexually assaulted in Manipur turned viral. In this regard, the official media handle of Manipur Police announced on Saturday on Twitter that six individuals, including one juvenile, had been arrested or apprehended. It was mentioned that in connection with the viral video of two women on May 4, 2023, another accused had been arrested on that day. The total number of arrests and apprehensions in the case stands at six, including five main accused and one juvenile, up to this point.
The arrests started on 20th July, 2023, with the first arrest being done only a few hours later the video surfaced widely. By Thursday 4 accused were arrested by the Police and all were remanded to 11 days police custody.
The police stated that they are putting forth all possible efforts to apprehend the remaining culprits. They are conducting raids at numerous suspected hideouts in their pursuit of bringing them to justice.
On July 19, Superintendent of Police (SP) K Meghachandra Singh issued a statement regarding the video depicting the appalling incident where two women were paraded naked by unknown armed miscreants on May 4, 2023. He revealed that a case of abduction, gangrape, and murder had been registered at Nongpok Sekmai Police Station (Thoubal district) against these unidentified armed miscreants responsible for the heinous act.
Since 3rd May, 2023 the state has been witnessing violence against the High Court's order to the state government to include the Meitei community in Scheduled Tribe (ST). Only STs are allowed to buy land in hilly regions. Following this order Kuki and Meitei communities are protesting against each other.
The majority Meitei community, residing in the Imphal valley and its adjacent regions, has sought Scheduled Tribe (ST) status due to their growing population and the increasing demand for land. The ST status would enable them to purchase lands in the hilly areas, fulfilling their requirements and aspirations.
The mother of one of the victims seen in the viral video, wherein two women were stripped naked, held, groped by a mob of men, and dragged to a field, has accused the Manipur government of failing to take adequate measures to control the violent situation or address the grievances of the protesting people.
The distressed mother, unable to speak for a few minutes due to the trauma, revealed that her husband and son were killed by the mob in Manipur before her daughter was brutally attacked on camera.
Amid all this violence women seem to be the prime victim. We hope that the surfacing political controversies are subsided and victims are given justice in the case.
