Mark Zuckerberg’s sprawling Palo Alto compound, formed from five merged properties, has angered neighbours over surveillance, prolonged construction noise, and alleged community disruption. Despite a spokesperson’s claims of goodwill, locals say the expansion has altered their once-idyllic neighbourhood, with some likening the billionaire’s underground structure to a private “bat cave.”

Residents of Palo Alto’s affluent Crescent Park have voiced frustration over Mark Zuckerberg’s expanding property empire in the area. The Meta CEO, who first moved in 14 years ago, has purchased five neighbouring homes and merged them into a single vast compound, reportedly complete with gardens, guest houses, a pickleball court, and a pool with a hydrofloor.
Neighbours say the changes have disrupted the once-peaceful atmosphere they enjoyed before his arrival. According to reports, the construction of new structures, some lasting up to eight years, created prolonged noise disturbances. Cameras installed as part of what has been described as “intense surveillance” allegedly point toward neighbouring properties, raising privacy concerns.
One long-time resident claimed that attempts to welcome Zuckerberg into the community were “rebuffed every time.” Others noted that several families have moved away since his purchases began. The billionaire’s properties reportedly include a massive 7,000-square-foot underground structure, which some neighbours have dubbed his “bat cave” and likened to a network of bunkers.

While Zuckerberg has not addressed the complaints personally, his spokesperson stated that he and his wife, Priscilla Chan, have made efforts to respect the neighbourhood, following regulations and taking extra steps to minimise disruption. Despite these assurances, some locals feel the growing compound has transformed the community in a way they never anticipated, with one neighbour remarking, “No neighbourhood wants to be occupied, but that’s exactly what they’ve done.”
