In a brazen assault on a military base in the Zhob district of Northern Balochistan, southern Pakistan, suspected Islamist militants launched a deadly attack using guns, hand grenades, and rockets. The militants stormed the base in the early hours, engaging in a fierce gun battle with security forces. The incident resulted in the deaths of at least four soldiers, while five others sustained critical injuries, according to a statement issued by the army.

Following the initial assault, the soldiers on duty successfully thwarted the terrorists' attempt to infiltrate the facility. A heavy exchange of fire ensued, during which three militants were killed. The army contained the remaining assailants to a small area at the boundary and initiated an operation to apprehend the two remaining attackers.

Militants Attack Military Base in Southern Pakistan
Suspected fighters attacked a military base armed with guns, hand grenades and rockets in southern Pakistan on Wednesday, killing at least four soldiers, army and security officials said.

Responsibility for the attack was claimed by Tehreek-e-Jihad Pakistan (TJP), a newly formed Islamist group. The TJP issued a statement asserting their involvement and announcing their intent to release pictures and videos of the fighters who participated in the assault.

Balochistan, a mineral-rich province that shares borders with Afghanistan and Iran, has been grappling with a longstanding ethnic separatist insurgency. Additionally, Islamist militants, seeking to overthrow the Pakistani government and impose their own strict interpretation of Islamic law, have been active in the region. Their attacks have intensified since the termination of a ceasefire agreement with the government in late 2022. Notably, in January, they carried out a bombing at a mosque in Peshawar, resulting in the tragic loss of over 100 lives.

Pakistan's army said on Wednesday it lost 12 soldiers in suspected militant attacks, including an assault on one of its bases.

Pakistan has accused militants of relocating their operations to Afghanistan, an allegation that Kabul denies. The ongoing violence underscores the security challenges faced by Pakistan as it confronts various militant groups operating within its borders, necessitating continued efforts to combat extremism and maintain stability in the region.
