Mizoram's Lalduhoma plans to meet Assam's Himanta Biswa Sarma during the North Eastern Council session to discuss longstanding border disputes. Triggered by a violent clash, the talks aim to resolve issues rooted in historical demarcations from 1875 and 1933. Both states seek a peaceful resolution, emphasizing dialogue over conflict.
Mizoram's
Chief Minister, Lalduhoma,
is preparing for a significant discussion with his Assam counterpart, Himanta
Biswa Sarma, to grapple with the enduring border disputes between their
respective states. This anticipated meeting is scheduled to take place during
the North Eastern Council (NEC) plenary session set for January 19 in Shillong.
The
escalation of border tensions between Mizoram and Assam reached a critical
point in July 2021, culminating in a violent clash that resulted in casualties
and injuries when the police forces from both states exchanged fire. This
regrettable incident underlined the urgency of resolving the longstanding
disputes that span a shared border of 164.6 kilometers. Consequently, both
states have engaged in multiple rounds of talks in an effort to preserve peace
along the border and seek viable solutions through diplomatic dialogue.
At the core of these disputes lie historical demarcations dating back to 1875 and 1933. The conflicting territorial claims hinge upon specific regions. Mizoram asserts its rights over a 509-square-mile area within the inner line reserved forest, originally designated in 1875 under the Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation (BEFR) 1873. On the contrary, Assam's stance relies on a map formulated by the Survey of India in 1933 as its constitutional boundary. However, the absence of ground demarcation significantly complicates the matter, further fueling discord.

The
aftermath of the violent clash prompted both states to emphasize the
significance of resolving disputes through dialogue to preempt future
conflicts. During a recent visit to Delhi, Mizoram's Chief Minister Lalduhoma
engaged in discussions with Union Home Minister Amit Shah, expressing a mutual
commitment to resolving these matters at a political level. To reinforce this
commitment, the Mizoram government aims to establish a boundary committee
inclusive of all stakeholders to tackle border-related issues with neighboring
states.
The
upcoming talks during the NEC plenary session provide an opportune moment for
both Chief Ministers to engage in constructive dialogue, seeking viable
resolutions to the protracted disputes. The participation of Union Home
Minister Amit Shah signifies a collective effort to facilitate communication
and negotiation between the two states, aiming for a peaceful resolution to the
simmering border tensions.
