In an unusual incident that took place on Wednesday, an independent MLA from Haridwar, arrived at the Uttarakhand Assembly on a tractor filled with sugarcane.
The MLA, identified as Umesh Kumar, was caught trying to get inside the Assembly, which had begun its three-day session just the day before, with the sugarcane produce.
He was granted entry into the Assembly premises by the police and security officials once they had confiscated the sugarcane from him. Kumar later clarified that he had carried the spoiled sugarcane with him to present in the House.
He explained that by this act he intended to point out to the administration that they should be ashamed of the inadequate compensation that was being offered to the farmers.
Kumar remarked, “I have brought the rotten crop to show it to the House and the government so that they may feel ashamed of the Rs 1100 per bigha compensation the government is offering to the farmers."
“Diesel needed to plough one bigha alone costs around Rs 1100...Today farmers don't have any money to buy even the seeds for planting crops…” he added.
The MLA further pointed out, “The government had said that nobody will trouble the farmers for 3 months but bankers have started knocking on the doors of farmers already...".
Hence, Kumar demanded that farmers in the state should be relieved from paying electricity bills, and offered interest-free loans, as well as the compensation they receive should be increased to Rs 11,000 per bigha.
He also called for the resignation of State Minister Satpal Maharaj, remarking, "He (Satpal Maharaj) is a careless minister.”
The MLA alleged, “It has been 1.5 years since the letter from the Centre regarding the Rs 180 crore plan related to the destruction of the embankments in the flood and he has not yet replied to that letter."
