A very strong earthquake hit Morocco late in the evening on
Friday, and sadly, it has caused the loss of over 2,000 lives and left more
than 2,000 people injured. Many have also lost their homes because of this
earthquake. On Saturday, the government decided to have three days of mourning
to remember and honor those who passed away.
King Mohammed VI of Morocco has instructed the military to send
specialized rescue teams and a field hospital to help after a big earthquake
hit. This earthquake damaged old buildings in Marrakesh, which is the nearest
big city to where it happened. But most of the people hurt or killed were in
the mountain areas to the south in places called Al-Haouz and Taroudant.
They are working hard to clear the roads so that they can rescue
people. The earthquake happened at 03:41:01 (UTC+5:30) n the morning, and it
was quite strong, felt from the south in Sidi Ifni to the north in Rabat and
even farther.
The center of the earthquake was about 72 kilometers west of
Marrakesh, which is a big economic center.
Turkey is getting ready to help too. They have medical, rescue,
and relief teams on standby, and they have tents ready to send if Morocco asks
for them.
Pictures and videos on social media show big piles of broken
buildings and lots of dust when walls fell because of the earthquake.
