Mumbai: Air Customs Seized Diamonds Worth Rs 1.49 Cr

On Wednesday, Mumbai air customs arrested a
passenger travelling to Dubai, from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International
Airport. The passenger was accused was possessing 1559.6 carat both natural and
lab grown diamonds worth Rs 1.49 Cr. The diamonds were seized by the customs
and accused was subsequently placed in judicial custody.
The method of concealment was quite ingenious,
as the diamonds were hidden within a tea packet, the customs officer further
added.

Earlier about 3 weeks ago, An incident involving a female police constable, Sandhyarani Anandrao Chavan from the Mumbai Police stationed at the immigration desk of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport has led to her termination from service. This action was taken following allegations that she was apprehended by Customs officials while in possession of smuggled gold valued at Rs 35.5 lakh. The constable was accused of collaborating with a member of a foreign gold smuggling syndicate to facilitate the discreet removal of the illicitly smuggled gold from the airport premises.
Sources from the Special Branch reported that
on April 23 this year, a foreign member of a gold smuggling syndicate arrived
from Bangkok via Air India flight AI-331. Customs' Air Intelligence Unit (AIU)
had prior knowledge about the foreigner, resulting in their apprehension. The
investigation also revealed the involvement of a female police staffer
assisting in moving the gold out of the airport.
