A fire outbreak that occurred late Saturday evening at a hospital in Vivek Vihar region of Delhi claimed the lives of at least six newborn babies. As per a senior police officer, Surendra Choudhary, there were 12 babies in the unit when the fire started and one more had died before the fire incident.

The cause of the fire’s rapid spread is believed to be the explosion of an oxygen cylinder, Delhi’s fire department director Atul Garg said. To put out the fire fourteen fire trucks were mobilized.

Delhi’s Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said that he was heartbroken that such negligence caused this tragedy and promised that “whoever is responsible… will not be spared. ” Despite the owner of the hospital escaping, he has said that legal actions will be taken.
