As the Women's World Cup kicks off in Australia and New Zealand, all eyes are on Moroccan defender Nouhaila Benzina, set to create history for her country's debut in the prestigious competition. The 25-year-old talent is leading Morocco to its first-ever qualification and is expected to become the first player to grace the Women's World Cup stage wearing a hijab.

However, if this tournament were held in France, the host of the previous Women's World Cup, Benzina's historic moment would be thwarted. Three weeks ago, a French court ruled in favour of the French Football Federation's (FFF) controversial decision to ban players from wearing Islamic headscarves during matches. The ban has drawn criticism from various quarters, with some arguing it impinges on religious rights. In contrast, others see it as a measure to uphold France's secular values.

The FFF's hijab ban is not the first instance of sports associations barring religious head coverings. Although FIBA, world basketball's governing body, discontinued its headgear ban in 2017, the debate around religious attire in sports continues.

France's largest Muslim population in Europe is a melting pot of diverse cultures and communities. The French national football teams boast players with ties to former colonial nations, including many with Muslim backgrounds.

Critics of the hijab ban, like Iqra Ismail, a coach with Hilltop Women FC in the UK, argue that it is a step backward for inclusivity in football. Ismail believes football and religious identity should coexist, emphasising the importance of embracing diversity.

Assile Toufaily, a sports-sociology Ph.D. candidate in France, highlights the irony of a country proud of its "Declaration of the Rights of Man and the Citizen" restricting the freedom of players based on a simple piece of cloth. The ban affects players' rights and sends a disheartening message to Muslim women who are passionate about football.

As Morocco prepares to face Germany in their World Cup opener, the focus is on their on-field performance and their symbolic stance in the face of controversy. The stage is set for Nouhaila Benzina to showcase her skills, determination, and faith, breaking barriers for Muslim women in football.
