In a pioneering move to
address mental health concerns among prisoners, authorities in Odisha have
launched a prisoner reformation skills program, complemented by the involvement
of mental health professionals. The initiative comes as the state grapples with
over 20,000 inmates across 87 facilities, aiming to equip them with livelihood
skills while discouraging criminal activities.
Under this program, Odisha has taken a significant step by appointing 40 mental health professionals to tackle the mounting anxiety and depression faced by inmates, potentially reducing instances of self-harm. This endeavor marks Odisha as the first Indian state to undertake such comprehensive mental health measures within its prison system.
Director General of Prisons
& DCS, Manoj Kumar Chhabra, expressed, "Prison is a place where the
inmates face anxiety and depression. We face a lot of mental health issues in
prison." The program not only targets inmates but also extends its
benefits to the prison staff, aiding them in coping with the stress of their
demanding roles.
Collaborating with the
Amulya Jeevan Foundation, the Directorate of Prisons and Correctional Services
in Odisha has introduced numerous skilled sessions for inmates, aiming to
utilize their free time constructively.
The 'Mukta Vihangam' project initiated within the Special Jail in Bhubaneswar includes features such as a community radio station, a library-skill development room, and creative spaces for inmates to engage in activities like theater, music, dance, and art.
Women inmates are not left
behind either; they are provided with skill training in hair and beauty
services. To cater to diverse interests, the prison administration has also
introduced modern skills training such as radio jockeying, beauty salon
management, horticulture, arts, and computer and mobile repairing.
Inmates have warmly
welcomed these programs, noting the transformation in their perspectives on
prison life. RJ Abhishek, a prisoner, remarked, "In Bhubaneswar, no
feelings of jail for me; it's like a boys hostel." This sentiment
highlights the success of these reformation initiatives in reshaping the way
prisoners perceive their time behind bars.
