An Indian man has been
apprehended by Kolkata's Special Task Force (STF) for falling into a honeytrap
orchestrated by Pakistani intelligence operatives. The suspect had been
transmitting sensitive Indian military information to Pakistan under the guise
of a fabricated identity on Facebook.
The suspect, identified as Bhaktabanshi Jha, originally from Bihar, was captured based on inputs shared by military intelligence. He had become entangled in a honeytrap, with a Pakistani intelligence operative assuming the false identity of 'Arushi Sharma' on Facebook.
Pretending to be a young woman, this operative initiated a friendship with Jha, eventually coaxing him into sharing images of Indian military installations.
Operating under the
pseudonym 'Arushi Sharma,' the Pakistani agent used an Indian mobile number to
communicate via WhatsApp. Their conversations soon escalated to explicit audio
and video exchanges. These illicit discussions continued until just hours
before Jha's arrest.
Intriguingly, 'Arushi' claimed to be the sister of a defense journalist working for a news organization. She enticed Jha into installing an application called "Net Camera," ostensibly tagging location details to clicked images.
While employed as a courier
delivery person in Delhi last October, Bhaktabanshi Jha initially came into
contact with a Pakistani intelligence operative (PIO) through Facebook. He also
communicated with another male officer from the Pakistani intelligence agency,
posing as 'Arushi's father.'
Investigations revealed
that 'Arushi' and her purported father had arranged for Jha to procure an
active SIM card to operate WhatsApp using an Indian number, even before he
joined the courier company in Kolkata.
On Friday, Jha was detained
by Kolkata STF, who brought him in for questioning based on classified
information obtained from his mobile phone, including photos, videos, online
chats, and more, which he had shared with the Pakistani intelligence operative
(PIO).
