Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend the BRICS Summit scheduled in Johannesburg from August 22 to August 24.
Speculations were rife that the Indian Prime Minister might follow Russian President Vladimir Putin's footsteps and participate in the summit virtually. However, his decision to be physically present at the event reflects the importance India places on engaging with other BRICS nations face-to-face.
The BRICS forum comprises five major emerging economies: Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. While China often tries to assert its dominance within the group, India and Brazil maintain an active role in expressing their views and concerns in this multilateral institution.
PM Modi's presence at the Johannesburg summit holds significance, as it comes at a time when several countries, including close allies like Saudi Arabia and UAE, have expressed keen interest in joining BRICS. Approximately 25 nations have submitted applications to become members of the forum, and a crucial decision regarding the expansion of the five-nation body will be made during the summit.
Earlier, PM Modi had a telephonic conversation with South African President Matemela Cyril Ramaphosa, who extended a formal invitation for the BRICS summit. During the call, the two leaders also discussed various regional and global issues of mutual interest.
Furthermore, Ramaphosa expressed full support for India's initiatives as part of its ongoing G-20 Presidency and eagerly anticipated his visit to India to attend the G-20 Summit.
With the summit just around the corner, all eyes will be on Johannesburg, where world leaders will gather to discuss pressing matters and pave the way for future collaborations among the BRICS nations.
