PM Modi to Honor Kargil Heroes and Launch Strategic Tunnel Project on 25th Vijay Diwas

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit the Kargil War Memorial on July 26, 2024, marking the 25th Kargil Vijay Diwas. He also announced the Shinkun La Tunnel Project to improve connectivity to Leh. The visit honors fallen soldiers and highlights strategic developments.
Today, on 26th July 2024, Kargil Vijay Diwas will be observed, and as part of this, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit the Kargil War Memorial. The visit’s purpose is to honor the soldiers who lost their lives in the 1999 Kargil War between India and Pakistan.
On the social media platform X, PM Modi said it was ‘a special day for every Indian’ and ‘a day to salute to all those who safeguard our nation. ’ Kargil War Memorial, also called the Dras War Memorial, is in the Kargil district of Ladakh, India, close to the Line of Control with Pakistan.
Parallel to this tribute, the Prime Minister also declared the starting of the Shinkun La Tunnel Project. This audacious task entails the creation of a 4.1 km long twin-tube tunnel located at an altitude of about 15,800 feet on Nimu-Padum-Darcha road. After construction, it will be the tallest tunnel in the world, enhancing the connectivity to Leh especially during winter when the road is blocked.
This tunnel is planned to help armed forces and defense equipment to move faster across the Line of Actual Control which is the border between India and China. Moreover, the project has the objective of enhancing the economic and social growth of Ladakh area.
Earlier, Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan said that the government and people of India will not forget the Kargil heroes and their sacrifices which will be a source of inspiration for the generations of soldiers and youths. He also emphasised ongoing changes within the tri-services stressing on increasing the fighting efficiency and keeping a state of battle readiness.

On this occasion of celebrating this important day, the visit of the PM to the Kargil War Memorial is also a reminder to the country of the brave Indian armed forces as well as to look forward to the strategic advancement for a better and stronger India’s defense system.
