Indian Prime
Minister Narendra Modi is all set to virtually inaugurate the newly constructed
integrated terminal building at Veer Savarkar International Airport in Port
Blair, Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The inauguration, scheduled for 18th July,
marks a significant step towards enhancing connectivity and promoting tourism
in the region.
With an
approximate cost of ₹710 crores (Rs. 7.1 billion), the state-of-the-art
terminal building is poised to play a crucial role in improving transportation
links in the union territory. Spanning across an expansive built-up area of
around 40,800 sqm, the terminal is designed to handle approximately five
million passengers annually.
The development also includes the construction of a new apron, allowing for the simultaneous parking of two Boeing-767-400 and two Airbus-321 types of aircraft. This enhancement, costing ₹80 crore (Rs. 0.8 billion), enables the airport to accommodate up to ten aircraft at a time, thereby improving operational efficiency, as stated by the Prime Minister's Office.
The architectural
design of the terminal building draws inspiration from the surrounding nature,
with its unique shell-shaped structure symbolizing the sea and islands of the
region. This distinct approach adds a charming touch to the airport's
appearance.
Emphasizing
sustainability, the new terminal incorporates several environmentally friendly
features. These include a double insulated roofing system to reduce heat gain,
skylights that maximize natural sunlight during the day, reducing the need for
artificial lighting, and the utilization of LED lighting and low heat gain
glazing.
To conserve water
resources, the terminal implements a rainwater catchment system that stores
water in an underground tank. Additionally, an on-site sewage treatment plant
ensures that 100% of the treated wastewater is repurposed for landscaping
purposes.
In a stride
towards cleaner energy consumption, the terminal also houses a 500 KW capacity
solar power plant, contributing to a greener approach.
The new
integrated terminal building is expected to have a significant impact on the
region's tourism and economy. Port Blair, already a sought-after tourist
destination in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, will attract even more visitors
due to the enhanced connectivity facilitated by the expansive terminal.
Furthermore, the
development will generate employment opportunities for the residents, providing
a much-needed economic boost to the region.
