The Thane police busted an IPL betting racket in Bhiwandi, arresting three men from Chhattisgarh. They had collected over Rs 18 lakh in bets. The fourth accused, who operated from Korba, is still absconding.
Thane, Apr 27: The Thane police seized an IPL betting racket from a hotel in Bhiwandi, arrested 3 people from Chhattisgarh, and continued to search for the one member who was a part of the illegal system.
According to a hint, a joint team of the Special Task Force and the Anti-Extortion Cell of the Thane Crime Branch caught a person at the hotel in the Kongaon village last night and arrested him on charges, informed the Deputy Commissioner of Police Shivraj Patil.
The culprits - Shannu Lalit Berival, Rajat Babula Sharma, and Vijay Sitaram Devgan were caught on spot while indulging in IPL betting through mobile apps the Superintendent of Police Mr. Patil explained in a briefing on the Friday.
In police custody, the accused was seized of 12 mobile phones, a tablet, a laptop and other equipment valued at Rs 1.97 lakh. And he has been credited with having collected 11,86,811 rupees from punters.

The 4th accused has fled and is still a fugitive. From Korba in Chhattisgarh, that person had managed to gather Rs 7,03,000 of bets. This information has been disclosed to the Assistant Commissioner Shekar Bagde.
Patil pointed out that the accused had obtained SIM cards using forged papers just to give their betting business a touch of legitimacy. An F.I.R has been lodged against these people under relevant sections of I.P.C 420 cheating, 465 forgery, 467-468, 471 and 34 by joint dishonest act.
Thane police started a hunt to catch the fourth accused. He was with the trio who were caught and was also part of the IPL betting racket. The investigation continues to identify the breadth of this illegal gambling network.
