In response to the fatal clash during a farmers' protest, the Punjab and Haryana High Court has taken significant steps. It has formed a committee headed by retired Judge Jaishree Thakur to probe into the circumstances surrounding the death of farmer Shubhkaran Singh. The court, headed by Acting Chief Justice GS Sandhawalia and Justice Lapita Banerji, expressed deep concern over the involvement of armed youngsters and the exposure of women and children to violence during the protest.

The committee, assisted by Additional Director Generals of Police from both Punjab and Haryana, will investigate various aspects of the case. This decision comes in the wake of a clash at the Khanauri border point between protesting farmers and security personnel, resulting in the death of Shubhkaran and injuries to several police personnel. The court emphasized that an impartial investigation is necessary as both states may have vested interests.

The committee's mandate includes determining the jurisdiction for investigating Shubhkaran's death and identifying the type of weapon used. It will also assess whether the use of force was proportional to the situation and address compensation issues. Concerns were raised over the presence of children and women in the protest, with the court highlighting the detrimental impact on young minds exposed to violence.

Both Punjab and Haryana are directed to extend full cooperation to the committee, which is expected to complete its inquiry within a month. The court set the next hearing for April 10, underscoring the urgency of the matter. The incident has garnered attention amidst ongoing farmer protests demanding reforms in agricultural policies, including MSP guarantees and loan waivers.

As the legal process unfolds, the focus remains on ensuring justice for Shubhkaran Singh and addressing the broader implications of protests on vulnerable groups.
