Akbar Al Baker has disclosed his decision to step down from his position,
culminating his remarkable 27-year tenure as the leader of this prominent
aviation enterprise. This transition is set to take effect from November 66.
Taking the reins from Al Baker will be Badr Mohammed Al-Meer, presently the CEO
of Hamad International Airport in Doha, widely recognized as the linchpin of
the nation's flagship carrier.
Qatar Airways, during Al Baker's stewardship, has ascended to become one of the most distinguished and trusted brands on the global stage. The airline boasts an impressive tally of seven prestigious "World's Best Airline" accolades, a testament to the strides made under Al Baker's visionary leadership. His tenure has been characterized by an outspoken and, at times, confrontational style, especially evident in negotiations with manufacturers and industry stakeholders.

Over the years, Al Baker has been known to make
controversial statements, including his assertion about women's suitability for
running airlines and his critique of American carriers. On these occasions, he
later extended apologies for any offense caused. In the past year, Al Baker
defended Qatar's hosting of the FIFA World Cup, vowing to maintain a steadfast
position against detractors.
As of July, Qatar Airways reported a profit of $1.2
billion for the preceding fiscal year, a commendable feat partly attributed to
the nation's successful staging of the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Although slightly
lower than the $1.5 billion profit of the prior year, this performance is
notable considering increased operational costs, particularly in jet fuel, due
to the post-pandemic resurgence of air travel.
In terms of revenue, Qatar Airways recorded an impressive $20.9 billion for the fiscal year, a substantial rise from the preceding year's $14.4 billion. This underscores the carrier's robust financial standing and its enduring commitment to excellence in the aviation industry.
