The Yamuna River, one of the lifelines of Delhi

The Yamuna River, one of the lifelines of Delhi, has swelled to an unprecedented level, overrunning low-lying areas and spilling onto the streets, causing widespread chaos and disruption in the city.

In the early hours of Thursday, the Yamuna River water level rose to 208.46 meters, according to authorities who were standing on the Old Railway Bridge. With water levels rising rapidly due to heavy monsoon rains in the region, authorities are grappling to mitigate the situation and ensure the safety of residents.

Raging Yamuna River at Record Level
On Wednesday, the water level at River Yamuna reached 207.55 metres, breaching 44-year record, officials said.

The Yamuna River, originating from the Yamunotri glacier in the lower Himalayas and flowing through several states before entering Delhi, has recently surpassed all previous records, submerging nearby villages and leading to the evacuation of thousands of people from vulnerable areas. Major arterial roads, including Ring Road, Wazirabad Road, and Kalindi Kunj Road, have been severely affected, bringing traffic to a standstill and leaving commuters stranded.

Authorities have been working round the clock to manage the crisis. The Delhi government, in collaboration with disaster management agencies and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), has deployed rescue teams equipped with boats and other necessary equipment.

 Low-lying areas
It is expected that the river will rise to 207.35 metres by 12 noon on Wednesday and continue to rise further, an official of the irrigation and flood control department said.

Efforts are underway to evacuate stranded residents and provide them with temporary shelter in relief camps. The administration has urged residents living in vulnerable areas to evacuate and relocate to safer places until the water levels recede.

The flooding of the Yamuna River raises concerns about the city’s drainage system and the encroachment of riverbeds and floodplains. The current situation emphasizes the urgency of implementing measures to mitigate flood risks and protect the environment.
