Yonhap news
agency reported that one day after the first session of the US-South Korea
security dialogue, North Korea launched two short-range ballistic missiles into
the East Sea on Wednesday, according to Seoul's military.
The Joint Chiefs
of Staff (JCS) of South Korea reported that the missile launches were detected
from the Sunan area in Pyongyang, occurring between 3:30 am and 3:46 am local
time. The missiles traveled approximately 550 kilometers before landing in the
sea.
The JCS strongly
denounced the missile launches as "acts of significant provocation"
that pose a threat to peace, not only on the Korean Peninsula but also to the
international community. They also labeled the launches as a "clear"
violation of UN Security Council resolutions.
The JCS stated
through a text message to reporters, as quoted by Yonhap news agency, that the
military will maintain a strong state of readiness, relying on its capabilities
to respond decisively to any provocations from North Korea.
Subsequently, the
missile launch occurred following the inaugural meeting of the Nuclear
Consultative Group (NCG) between South Korea and the United States in Seoul,
where they reaffirmed the US' commitment to employing its full range of
military capabilities, including nuclear weapons, to safeguard its ally.
Coinciding with
the NCG meeting, the USS Kentucky, an American nuclear-capable strategic
submarine (SSBN), arrived at a crucial naval base in Busan, situated 320
kilometers southeast of Seoul. This marked the first port visit by such a
submarine since the USS Robert E. Lee in March 1981.
Earlier, on June
12, Pyongyang had conducted a test-fire of the Hwasong-18 solid-fuel
intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) on July 12, as reported by Yonhap
news agency.
