On Thursday, during the Rajya Sabha session, a light-hearted exchange occurred between Mallikarjun Kharge, the Leader of Opposition in the Upper House, and Chairman Jagdeep Dhankar. This rare moment of laughter in the Parliament came amidst a logjam over several issues, including the violence in Manipur.
Kharge expressed his frustration, saying that he is asked to speak but then quickly made to sit down, and this keeps happening repeatedly. He mentioned that 176 and 267 notices were given on the same day, and he fails to understand why having a discussion under rule 267 has become a matter of pride. He stated that he provided a reason for the discussion, but his request seemed to have angered the Chairman.
Dhankhar's response to Kharge's remark brought laughter to the House as he humorously said, "I have been married for over 45 years, sir..." This light-hearted comment provided a moment of relief amid the tense exchanges between the Opposition and Treasury Benches in the Rajya Sabha.
"Sir, I have been married for over 45 years. I never get angry (Main kabhi gussa nahi krta). Trust me. Mr. Chidambaram is a highly distinguished senior advocate, and he knows that as senior advocates, we have no right to display our anger, especially towards the authorities. You are an authority, sir. Kindly reconsider your statement," Dhankhar stated.
The Leader of Opposition in the Upper House took the opportunity to respond to the Chairman once again, saying, "You may not show your anger, but it is apparent that you feel it inside." This remark elicited laughter from MPs, including the Chairman.
