Jamila Islam, the wife of Detective First Grade Didarul Islam, who was killed in the Midtown mass shooting last month, has given birth to their third child. The baby boy, named Arham, was born on Sunday night, just weeks after the city mourned the fallen officer.

Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch confirmed the news in a heartfelt statement, saying, “Out of tragedy, a new life has entered this world.” She noted that Arham now joins his elder brothers Ahyan and Azhaan, and assured the family that the NYPD would always honor and protect Didarul’s legacy of service and courage.

Mayor Eric Adams, who was at the hospital with the family, also expressed solidarity. “I know how special Arham’s birth is for this family that is still dealing with heartbreak after losing their hero,” he wrote, adding that the entire city stands ready to support them during this painful time.

Detective Islam, 36, was killed on July 28 when a gunman opened fire inside a Park Avenue high-rise in Midtown Manhattan. The shooter, identified as 27-year-old Shane Tamura of Las Vegas, killed four people including Islam before taking his own life. Authorities later revealed that Tamura had intended to target the NFL headquarters in the same building but ended up in the wrong area. A note requesting examination of his brain for CTE was found, pointing to a history of mental health struggles.

Didarul Islam, remembered as a trailblazer and the first NYPD officer of Bangladeshi origin to die in the line of duty, joined the force in 2019 and had quickly risen through the ranks. For his family and colleagues, his loss remains immeasurable, but the birth of Arham is seen as a ray of hope in a moment of grief.
