Summary: Sonam Wangchuk, a prominent Ladakh activist, was detained by Delhi Police while leading a march to advocate for statehood and autonomy for Ladakh. His detention has sparked political backlash, with leaders from AAP and Congress criticizing the BJP's actions and calling for respect for Wangchuk's peaceful protest efforts. The demands include recognition under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution and a public service commission for Ladakh.
Ladakh activist and climate advocate Sonam Wangchuk was detained by Delhi Police late Monday night while leading a march from Leh to the capital, known as the "Delhi Chalo Padyatra." Along with approximately 120 other activists, Wangchuk was apprehended at the Delhi border for allegedly violating prohibitory orders, prompting criticism from the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
The protest march aimed to draw attention to the demands for greater autonomy and statehood for Ladakh, a cause Wangchuk has championed for years. He previously appealed to the Ministry of Tribal Affairs for Scheduled Area status under the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution, a move that aligns with the longstanding aspirations of the Leh Apex Body (ABL) and Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA). These groups have been advocating for statehood, a public service commission for Ladakh, and reserved Lok Sabha seats for both Leh and Kargil districts.
Wangchuk's detention has incited political outrage, with Delhi Chief Minister Atishi alleging that the BJP's actions reflect a "dictatorship." She attempted to meet Wangchuk at the Bawana police station but was denied access. The AAP and Congress leaders, including KC Venugopal, have expressed their disapproval, questioning the legality of detaining respected figures like Wangchuk, who has garnered national recognition for his contributions to education and environmental activism.

The protests come after earlier discussions between the ABL-KDA and the Union Home Ministry stalled, leading Wangchuk and fellow activists to stage a 21-day hunger strike in Leh earlier this year. Many protesters, including Wangchuk, had sought official permission for their march, but representatives claimed this information was used against them. The activists have emphasized that their march was peaceful and aimed at advocating for the rights of Ladakhis.
