Sonia Gandhi conducted her initial public gathering in Hubbali after her last public appearance at the Ramlila Maidan located in Delhi in December 2019. Asaduddin Owaisi, the leader of AIMIM, expressed his disapproval of Gandhi’s support for Jagadish Shettar, who switched from BJP to Congress and is now a candidate from Karnataka.
Owaisi challenged the ideology of Congress and alleged their
failure in the ideological conflict. Additionally, he alleged that Sonia Gandhi
endorsed a contender with connections to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS),
which is the BJP’s ideological predecessor and raised concerns about her
commitment to secularism.
Despite his affiliation with the RSS, Congress has defended the appointment of Shettar by asserting that he is a “non-religious individual.” Sonia Gandhi, accompanied by Rahul Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, the President of Congress, and Shettar, censored the BJP for propagating “animosity” and encouraged individuals to amplify their dissent against the administration’s “sinister governance.”
The opposition within the Congress party, as well as the
wider resistance to the BJP, are exemplified by Owaisi’s objections to Sonia
Gandhi’s backing of Shettar. While certain members are amenable to
collaborating with BJP deserters, others doubt their dedication to secularism
and view them as a hindrance.
The imminent Karnataka state legislative election scheduled
for May 10th poses a crucial challenge for the Congress party as they strive to
reclaim their previously held influence overrun by the BJP in the past few
years.
