Valverde, a seasoned coach, boasts an impressive record
of 26 matches between Athletic Club and FC Barcelona. His journey includes
managing Athletic Club in 21 fixtures and FC Barcelona in five. Yet, his
connection with these two clubs runs deeper, as he once graced the pitch as a
player. Valverde's playing career saw him don both the FC Barcelona and
Athletic Club jerseys. He transitioned to coaching in Bilbao, starting at the
Lezama academy, and later assumed the role of Athletic Club's first-team coach
in 2003.
Johan Cruyff, a keen judge of talent, recognized
Valverde's potential as a coach, describing him as "one of the most
outstanding and most promising coaches in Spain." This affirmation led
Valverde to numerous successes at Athletic Club, RCD Espanyol, and Olympiacos,
eventually earning him the coveted FC Barcelona job.
A significant chapter of Valverde's coaching career was
at RCD Espanyol, where he steered the team to the UEFA Cup final. Fond memories
of victories at the Estadi Olímpic against clubs like Maccabi Haifa, Benfica,
and Werder Bremen still linger in the minds of Catalan club fans.
Valverde's tenure at FC Barcelona witnessed a resurgence, with the team securing consecutive LALIGA titles in 2017/18 and 2018/19. Despite initial challenges, Valverde's leadership reaffirmed Barcelona's dominance in Spanish football. However, their Champions League campaigns ended in shocking defeats, which ultimately led to Valverde's departure.
