In a high-stakes encounter during the 38th match of the World Cup 2023, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh engaged in a dramatic showdown that culminated with a snubbed handshake, and Angelo Mathews was at the centre of a contentious dismissal. The Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi witnessed a significant rivalry unfolding, marked by intense moments and culminating in an unexpectedly cold conclusion.

After Bangladesh's narrow three-wicket victory, players from both teams, notably the Sri Lankan and Bangladeshi cricketers, declined the customary post-match handshake, a gesture that symbolizes sportsmanship and respect. Social media circulated a video capturing the players walking off the field without extending their hands in acknowledgment of the game's spirit.

Angelo Mathews, who was involved in the contentious firing, responded to the handshake incident with a profound statement. He underlined the value of mutual respect, regardless of the outcome, saying, "You have to respect people who respect us." It does not imply that they must appreciate the game itself. I mean, we're all ambassadors for this wonderful game."

Tensions rose throughout the game as players from both teams participated in brawls. During the 10th over, a conversation took place between a Bangladesh bowler and Sri Lanka's skipper, Kusal Mendis. The critical moment occurred when Angelo Mathews was timed out, which sparked controversy and raised issues about sportsmanship.

Shakib, who was key to the debate, expounded on the situation. "One of our fielders approached me and said, if you appeal, the law says he's out because he didn't take his guard in time." So I went to the umpires, who asked me whether I was going to call him back. I told him I wasn't going to call him back. It was in the regulations that a batter had to come to the crease within that time frame, and he wasn't there," he stated after the game.

In contrast, Mathews defended his position, saying, "I have two minutes to get to the crease and get myself ready, which I did." Then, there was an issue with the equipment. And I'm not sure where Shakib's and Bangladesh's common sense went because it's absolutely awful. If they want to play cricket like way, I believe something is very wrong. After my helmet snapped off, I just had five seconds left."

The Sri Lanka-Bangladesh match was marked by controversy, displaying the players' fierce intensity and emotional engagement. The unwillingness to shake hands and Mathews' controversial dismissal will surely remain hotly debated subjects in the cricket world.
