Sri Lanka's journey in the Cricket World Cup has hit another snag, as their skipper Dasun Shanaka faces a setback. Following an injury sustained during their clash with Pakistan on October 10, Shanaka has been ruled out of the tournament. The injury, a right thigh muscle strain, is expected to sideline him for at least three weeks.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) issued a statement confirming the unfortunate news and the need for a replacement within the Sri Lankan squad. In response, the ICC Event Technical Committee swiftly approved the inclusion of Chamika Karunaratne as Shanaka's replacement. This move is aimed at keeping the Sri Lankan team's hopes alive in the competition.

Sri Lanka's World Cup campaign hasn't been smooth sailing, with losses in their first two matches against South Africa and Pakistan. Despite these challenges, Dasun Shanaka had shone in their previous game against South Africa in New Delhi, where he delivered a remarkable performance. He scored 68 runs from 62 balls, playing a pivotal role in chasing down a formidable target of 429.

Chamika Karunaratne, the chosen replacement, is a versatile player who adds depth to the team. He is known for his middle-order batting skills and right-arm medium-paced bowling. Karunaratne has prior experience in One Day Internationals (ODIs), having played 23 matches for the Sri Lankan team. In these matches, he has managed to take 24 wickets and score 443 runs, including a half-century.

The decision to include Karunaratne in the squad comes with the hope that he can fill the void left by Shanaka's absence, ensuring that Sri Lanka remains competitive in the Cricket World Cup. As the team looks to rebound from their initial setbacks, they are banking on Karunaratne's skills and experience to help them perform better in the upcoming matches.

In the fiercely competitive world of cricket, injuries are an unfortunate reality, and quick decisions like this replacement are crucial to a team's success. Sri Lanka will now shift their focus to the remainder of the tournament, hoping to regain their momentum and secure a spot in the playoffs.
