Bindeshwar Pathak, the visionary founder behind Sulabh International's crusade against open defecation through the establishment of community toilets, passed away from an unexpected cardiac arrest on Tuesday.

The social organisation he initiated aimed at championing human rights, ecological hygiene, waste management, and progressive reforms through educational avenues.

The untimely demise followed Pathak's symbolic flag hoisting on Independence Day morning, culminating in a sudden collapse.

He was immediately taken to the AIIMS Delhi, where he was declared dead at 1.42 pm.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveyed his condolences, underscoring Pathak's instrumental role in propelling societal advancement and uplifting marginalised factions.

The Prime Minister, through a tribute shared on X (formerly Twitter), acknowledged Pathak's pivotal contribution in endorsing the Swachh Bharat Mission and extolled his dedication to realising a cleaner India.

Bindeshwar Pathak's journey was a tapestry of commitment and accomplishments:

1. Emerging from a Brahmin lineage in Bihar, Pathak's expedition initiated in the hamlet of Rampur Baghel. His early nurturing stemmed from his parents, Yogmaya Devi and Ramakant Pathak.

2. Relocating to Patna, he pursued sociology at B.N. College and briefly served as an educator before actively engaging with the Gandhi Centenary Committee as a voluntary participant.

3. Influenced by Mahatma Gandhi's ethos, Pathak devoted five decades to advocating for the rights of manual scavengers, predominantly women hailing from the lowest echelons of the caste system.

4. In 1973, he orchestrated an MLA's plea to then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, spotlighting the predicament of manual scavengers. Indira Gandhi's responsive directive urged the chief minister's personal intervention.

5. A modest inception in 1973 with a 500-rupee grant from an Arrah municipality official paved the way for the creation of two exemplar toilets that resonated with authorities, consequently catalysing an expansive sanitation enhancement initiative.

Bindeshwar Pathak's legacy is perpetuated by the ongoing endeavours of Sulabh International in propelling positive societal transformation and elevating sanitation standards across India.
