In a spectacular display of power-hitting, Australian
all-rounder Glenn Maxwell created history at the Arun Jaitley Stadium by
smashing the fastest-ever century in Cricket World Cup history. Maxwell's
remarkable feat left cricket enthusiasts around the globe in awe as he blazed
to a hundred in just 40 balls, eclipsing the previous record set by South
African star Aiden Markram.
Former Indian cricket captain Sunil Gavaskar, who had
earlier criticized Maxwell for what he deemed "careless" shots,
couldn't help but turn into an admirer after witnessing Maxwell's breathtaking
performance.
Maxwell's fireworks began during the 40th over of the
innings when he strode to the crease after the dismissal of centurion David
Warner. Unfazed by the fall of wickets, Maxwell immediately sent the ball to
the boundary ropes with consecutive fours off his second and third deliveries.
Despite a minor hiccup with Cameron Green's wicket, Maxwell continued his
ferocious assault, reaching his fifty in a mere 24 balls. What followed was
sheer carnage as he plundered 26 runs in a single over, ultimately notching up
a century in just 40 deliveries.
After the electrifying match, Sunil Gavaskar heaped praise on Maxwell, labeling his shots as some of the greatest in cricket history. Gavaskar marveled at Maxwell's audacious six and suggested that it deserved a score of 12. He commended Maxwell's ability to unsettle the bowlers with a range of shots and pace, highlighting that, in contrast, it took Gavaskar himself a whopping 40 balls to open his account during his playing days.

Notably, Gavaskar had criticized Maxwell prior to the
match for his reckless approach, particularly in the game against Pakistan.
However, Maxwell's historic century seems to have silenced his critics and
turned them into fans.
In the match itself, Australia went on to dominate the Netherlands in a one-sided contest, registering their third victory in the tournament. They achieved an astounding 309-run victory after setting a challenging target of 400 runs, marking the largest margin of victory in the history of the ODI World Cup.
