The Supreme Court questioned the Andhra Pradesh government's handling of the Tirupati Prasadam controversy, emphasizing the separation of religion and politics. The court sought proof of adulterated ghee used in laddus while expressing concerns about the publicization of unverified claims.
The Supreme Court of India recently raised critical questions regarding the Tirupati Prasadam issue, asserting that religious matters should remain distinct from political agendas. The court's observations came during a hearing on allegations that adulterated ghee was used in the preparation of the sacred Tirumala laddus. Justice BR Gavai expressed concern over the necessity of publicizing such claims before confirming whether the ghee in question was indeed contaminated.
The controversy ignited when Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu suggested that animal fat had been utilized in making the prasadam during the tenure of Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy. In response, the state government formed a Special Investigation Team to delve into the accusations. However, the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) dismissed Naidu's claims, arguing they were politically motivated and aimed at undermining the sanctity of the Tirupati temple.
During the court proceedings, Justice Gavai emphasized the importance of respecting religious sentiments, questioning the urgency to go public with the allegations when the investigation was still ongoing. The court also requested proof regarding the alleged use of contaminated ghee and hinted at the possibility of transferring the investigation to an independent agency to ensure impartiality.
