The Supreme Court on Monday reprimanded the Mamata Banerjee-led West Bengal government for its slow progress in installing CCTVs and improving infrastructure at medical facilities. The court was hearing a case regarding the rape and murder of a 31-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Kolkata.

A bench led by Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, along with Justices J.B. Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, expressed dissatisfaction with the government’s lackluster pace in completing essential tasks like installing security cameras and constructing toilets and restrooms for medical staff. The bench emphasized that despite monitoring the case since August, no task has been completed beyond 50%.

The court instructed the state government to complete the pending work by October 15, warning against further delays. The victim’s family raised concerns about repeated social media leaks of her photos and identity, which the court had already ordered law enforcement to prevent.

During the session, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta was questioned about the ongoing CBI probe. The court noted significant progress in uncovering leads related to both the rape-murder case and financial irregularities at the hospital. The CBI was directed to share information with the state government for action against involved individuals.

The next hearing in this case is scheduled for October 14.
