The Supreme Court has granted bail to businessman Amandeep Singh Dhall in connection with a money laundering investigation linked to the Delhi excise policy. The court noted the trial had not begun, with over 300 witnesses pending, and emphasized that his continued custody would serve no purpose.
In a significant legal development, the Supreme Court has granted bail to businessman Amandeep Singh Dhall, who is embroiled in a money laundering probe linked to the controversial Delhi excise policy. Dhall was arrested in March 2022 by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) for his alleged involvement in discrepancies within the now-repealed 2021-22 excise policy.
During the hearing, a bench comprising Justices Surya Kant and Ujjal Bhuyan emphasized that the trial had not yet commenced, with over 300 witnesses still to be examined. The court noted that Dhall had already been granted bail in a related money laundering case, and it opined that continuing his judicial custody would not serve any constructive purpose. “Without expressing any opinion on merits, we direct the petitioner to be released on bail,” the court stated.
The ED had accused Dhall of attempting to bribe its officials, with additional allegations of him being part of a conspiracy to benefit from the excise policy and facilitating kickbacks to the Aam Aadmi Party, which governs Delhi. The bench also mentioned that other co-accused, including former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, had been granted bail.

Dhall’s legal team challenged a prior rejection of bail by the Delhi High Court in June, arguing that the lengthy custody—over 18 months—was unwarranted given the circumstances of the case. The court’s decision marks a pivotal moment in a case that has drawn considerable attention due to its political implications and the involvement of high-profile figures.
