Supreme Court to Undergo Significant Expansion: Plans Include 27 New Courtrooms and Enhanced Amenities for Legal Professionals and Litigants

The Supreme Court (SC) is embarking on an ambitious journey to revamp its operational framework by initiating an extensive expansion initiative, Chief Justice of India, DY Chandrachud, disclosed on Tuesday.

As per Bar and Bench report, he said this while speaking at the commemorative event held by the SCBA within the Supreme Court premises to celebrate Independence Day

Major Expansion
Supreme Court of India undergoes major expansion with 27 new courtrooms and improved facilities for legal professionals and litigants.

The CJI said that the Court is gearing up to develop an additional 27 courtrooms in conjunction with four registrar courtrooms, all while enhancing provisions for lawyers and those engaged in litigation.

This strategic move stems from the Court's desire to contemporize its infrastructure and adapt to the escalating demands placed upon it.

CJI Chandrachud emphasised that the expansion's primary goal is to effectively address the burgeoning caseload and to supply upgraded amenities for legal professionals and litigants navigating the legal landscape.

The comprehensive strategy encompasses the phased deconstruction of the existing museum and annex building, a critical step in making room for modern courtrooms and dedicated spaces tailored to meet the requirements of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA), the Supreme Court Advocates-on-Record Association (SCAORA), and a segregated area designated for female legal practitioners.

Chandrachud confirmed the submission of the expansion proposal to the Central government. However, the final decision and realisation of this ambitious endeavour hinges on the Department of Justice's verdict.

Remarkably, the expansion blueprint follows a well-planned, phased trajectory. The latter phase contemplates a partial dismantling of the current edifice to establish an additional 12 courtrooms. This methodical and transformative progression aligns seamlessly with the Court's commitment to nurturing the rule of law and ensuring unfettered access to justice for every individual.

CJI Chandrachud reiterated the interconnected narrative of India's judicial history and the collective struggles of its populace. He emphasised that the onus is on the apex court to dismantle barriers that impede citizens' access to justice. The envisaged roadmap seeks to make the Constitution's provisions accessible even to the most marginalised segments of society, effectively epitomising the Court's dedication to fortifying democracy and fostering an equitable societal fabric.
