ASI Survey at Gyanvapi Mosque

On Friday, the Supreme Court declined to halt the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) from proceeding with its "scientific inquiry" of the Gyanvapi mosque grounds in Varanasi. However, the court urged the ASI to uphold its commitment to employing solely "non-intrusive techniques" during the survey. The court emphasized that there must be no digging on the premises and no harm inflicted on any walls or structures.

The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) had initiated the survey in Varanasi on Friday, prior to the case being heard in Delhi by a panel led by Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud.

On Thursday, the Allahabad High Court granted permission to the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) to perform a scientific examination of the Gyanvapi premises in Varanasi. The purpose is to ascertain whether the mosque from the 17th century was constructed above an existing Hindu temple structure. Shortly after the high court upheld a district court's decision and deemed the survey essential for justice and advantageous for all parties, the Anjuman Intezamia Masjid committee appealed the verdict in the Supreme Court.

Enhanced security measures have been implemented around the Gyanvapi premises in preparation for the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) to commence its examination of the Gyanvapi mosque complex on 4th August, 2023.

Commencing on Friday at 7am and scheduled until 12pm, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) initiated an exhaustive scientific examination of the Gyanvapi complex. Amid stringent security measures, the ASI team, along with representatives of the Hindu petitioners involved in the legal dispute concerning the mosque, were present within the complex throughout the survey.

Officials stated that the ASI team arrived at the location by 7 am and concluded their tasks for the day at 5 pm. The survey will continue from Saturday morning.

On Friday, a court in Varanasi provided the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) with an extra four-week period to finish their scientific investigation of the Gyanvapi mosque, situated near the Kashi Vishwanath temple. In response to an appeal by the ASI, District Judge A K Vishvesha granted the extension.
