Thousands of citizens marched in a 42-km torch rally from Hiland Park to Shyambazar in Kolkata on Friday, demanding justice for a trainee doctor who was raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College last month. The peaceful protest saw participation from doctors, professors, scientists, IT professionals, and other groups, all united in solidarity with the victim, dubbed “Abhaya.”

The rally, which began at 4 pm and concluded at midnight, passed through key city landmarks, including Science City, VIP Bazar, and NRS Medical College, before ending at Shyambazar. Demonstrators held torches and waved the national flag while chanting slogans, urging a swift and fair trial.

Participants expressed their frustrations with the slow pace of justice. "Justice delayed is justice denied," one protester remarked, demanding punishment for those responsible for the horrific crime.

Football clubs Mohun Bagan and East Bengal joined the protest, highlighting the widespread outrage and support across various social sectors. Some participants, like a retired school teacher, were deeply moved by the case. "The victim could have been my granddaughter," she said, adding that she hoped for justice to prevent future tragedies.

In a related development, junior doctors in West Bengal ended their 11-day sit-in strike outside Swasthya Bhavan, partially resuming duties but promising to continue their protest until their demands for improved healthcare conditions and safety are met.
