A horrific explosion disrupted a Catholic Mass in Marawi City, Philippines, causing the tragic deaths of three individuals and injuring numerous others. The incident, labeled as an act of terrorism, occurred during the Sunday morning service held at the Marawi State University's gymnasium. The explosion instigated chaos and fear among the worshippers present.

Security forces swiftly responded to the scene, cordoning off the area and commencing an investigation to determine the perpetrators behind this devastating attack. The security chief of the university, Taha Mandangan, condemned the incident, emphasizing the indiscriminate nature of a bomb's impact.

Authorities have not ruled out the involvement of Muslim militants residing in the region, despite extensive military and police efforts to maintain peace. Marawi City predominantly houses a Muslim population within a largely Roman Catholic nation, serving as a historical site of separatist conflict.

The university expressed profound dismay and horror at the violence, asserting that such acts have no place in a civilized society, especially within an institution of higher learning.

This tragic event in Marawi City echoes the city's troubled history. In 2017, the city was besieged by Islamic militants affiliated with ISIS, resulting in over 1,100 casualties, predominantly militants, before the Filipino forces, aided by international support, managed to quell the five-month-long siege.

Despite peace accords signed between the government and major insurgent groups, smaller armed factions have persistently rejected these agreements. They continue to perpetrate bombings and assaults, evading government forces and undermining efforts to stabilize the region.
