A farmer from Andhra Pradesh's Chittoor district has managed to make an impressive income of ₹4 crore within a 45-day period, taking advantage of the surging tomato prices in the country. Chandramouli, who owns 22 acres of farming land, decided to cultivate a rare tomato variety known as ‘Sahu’ in early April. By utilising advanced farming techniques like mulching and micro-irrigation, he successfully accelerated the tomato yield, leading to a bountiful harvest by the end of June.
During the last 45 days, Chandramouli sold his tomato produce at the nearby Kolar market in Karnataka, which is conveniently located close to his hometown. Despite fluctuations in prices, he managed to sell an impressive total of 40,000 boxes of tomatoes during this period.
Chandramouli shared his success, stating, "From the produce I got so far, I have earned ₹4 crore. Overall, I had to invest ₹1 crore in my 22 acres of land to get the yield, and this includes commission and transportation charges. So, profits remain to be ₹3 crore," as reported by India Today.
In response to the significant increase in tomato prices nationwide, the NCCF (National Cooperative Consumers' Federation) and NAFED (National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation) took action by procuring tomatoes from wholesale markets in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Maharashtra. The objective was to distribute these tomatoes to major consumption centres where retail prices had experienced the highest surge in the past month.
Authorities attributed the price hike to the monsoon season, which created distribution challenges and resulted in increased transit losses. As farmers like Chandramouli capitalise on the current market conditions, steps are being taken to stabilise tomato prices and ensure affordability for consumers.
