Three students died after being trapped in a flooded basement at Rau's IAS Study Circle in Delhi's Rajendra Nagar. The incident sparked rescue operations, political controversy, and calls for an inquiry into safety measures at educational institutions during heavy rains.
A sad event occurred in West Delhi last night where three students died in the class after being detained in a flooded basement of a well-known coaching institute. One of the unfortunate cases happened at Rau’s IAS Study Circle located at Rajendra Nagar where students were struck in the building due to a sudden flood for more than four hours.
Fire brigade officials got a panic call at 19:07:19 hrs and they immediately ordered five fire tenders to the area. However, the following morning, two female students and one male student were traced dead despite the rescue operation. Their bodies have been taken to the hospital for any further legal actions.
DCP Central Delhi M Harshavardhan told that the rescue operation was still continuing and there was a seven feet water logged in the basement of the society. He had appealed to the students to stay away from the area so as not to hinder the rescue mission.
Delhi Fire Chief Atul Garg said that 30 students had been rescued, however, there may be more victims trapped inside as the rescue teams were still looking for them. The occurrence of the tragedy has then sparked debates on the measures in place to prevent such disasters in learning institutions especially in regions with frequent flooding.
Delhi Public Works Department Minister Atishi was quick to comment on the tragedy and as a result, ordered a magisterial inquiry with a 24-hour deadline to submit a report. AAP MLA Durgesh Pathak from the local area and the mayor of the city Shelly Oberoi were present at the site to monitor rescue operations.
The incident has brought political controversy in the picture, where the BJP MP, Bansuri Swaraj, has accused the AAP government of neglecting the drain maintenance in the locality. Pathak further argued that this was not the time to put politics into consideration since the main focus should be on ensuring that people’s lives were saved.
